Get moving this National Fitness Day, 24 September 2025

Comments Off on Get moving this National Fitness Day, 24 September 2025

How will you be keeping active this National Fitness Day? Whether it’s trying out a new exercise class, taking a dip in the pool, or having a go in the gym, this nationwide campaign is all about inspiring people to move more and enjoy the physical and mental benefits of being active every single day.

With one in four people in England classed as inactive (doing less than 30 minutes of physical activity a week), National Fitness Day is a powerful opportunity to get millions more people moving and support the NHS by improving the nation’s health.

Did you know?

The UK Chief Medical Officers’ Guidelines recommend:

  • Adults: At least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week – or a mix of both.
  • Strengthening activities: At least two days a week.
  • Reduce sitting: Break up long periods of inactivity.
  • Children and young people: At least 60 minutes of activity every day.

Powered by You!

This year’s theme, ‘Powered by You!’, celebrates the role everyone can play, from individuals and communities to businesses, schools and hospitals, in spreading the message about the importance of physical activity.

As more people prioritise their physical and mental wellbeing, National Fitness Day is a chance to celebrate all the ways we can stay active to support our health and quality of life.

Fancy popping along to an NL Active facility?

Here are just a few ways you can get involved locally:

Council’s Fit for Free initiative boosts health and wellbeing for hundreds of residents

Comments Off on Council’s Fit for Free initiative boosts health and wellbeing for hundreds of residents

North Lincolnshire Council is celebrating the early success of its Fit for Free initiative, a health and well-being programme to support older residents, and individuals with learning disabilities, across the region.

Launched on 1 April 2025, the scheme offers eight weeks of complimentary off-peak access to swimming, gym facilities, and virtual fitness classes.

It is open to residents aged 66 and over and residents aged 16 and above with a learning disability, and aims to:

• Encourage more active lifestyles
• Enhance physical and mental well-being
• Reduce social isolation among target groups

Between April and July, the programme has already seen 788 participants across seven leisure sites.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “Fit for Free is about more than just fitness – it’s about opportunity, connection, and giving people the tools to live healthier, happier lives.

“We made a promise to support our older residents through the cost of living challenges, and this initiative is part of keeping that promise. By removing financial barriers, we’re helping people stay active, connected and well, physically and mentally.”

Cllr Carl Sherwood, cabinet member for safer, stronger communities (rural), added: “This initiative is also a vital part of our wider plan to support residents with complex needs, including those with learning disabilities, to live more independently.

“By investing in accessible health and well-being opportunities, we’re empowering people to take control of their lives and build confidence in their communities.”

For more information on accessing the Fit for Free initiative go to the NL Active Fit for Free page on our website.

Teeing up triumphs, Normanby Hall Golf Course juniors lead the way

Comments Off on Teeing up triumphs, Normanby Hall Golf Course juniors lead the way

Looking for a little summer sporting inspiration? Our talented junior golfers at Normanby Hall Golf Course have been providing plenty of it, with a string of fantastic performances both in league play and individual competitions.

In the Sixes League, our team has been on an incredible run, winning all four rounds since the last update. With six rounds now played, we currently sit one point clear at the top of the table with three matches to go.

Just as impressive as their results has been the way they’ve represented the club, staying behind to socialise and supporting every clubhouse they’ve visited along the way.

It’s also been a busy time for our players in individual events. Cooper, Jesse, and Arthur shone at the Little Imps Lincolnshire event at Woodthorpe Hall, finishing in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th team positions respectively. Arthur also competed at Stoke Rochford, while the following week’s Little Imps event at Ashby Decoy saw four of our juniors take part, with three of them helping secure the winning team spot!

On top of that, Jesse and Cooper impressed at the UK Kids Open Qualifier at Belton Park, both winning their age categories and securing places at the national finals at Whittlebury Park, Northamptonshire, at the end of August. A huge achievement and an exciting opportunity to compete on a bigger stage!

At Normanby Hall Golf Course, we’re proud to see our juniors not only performing so well, but also showing true sportsmanship, team spirit, and passion for the game. We can’t wait to see what they achieve in the final leagues rounds and upcoming events.

Fancy giving golf a go?

Whether you’re a complete beginner or keen to improve your swing, Normanby Hall Golf Course offers sessions for all ages and abilities in a welcoming and scenic setting. Come and see where golf could take you!

Winterton Gym investment extends access hours and launches new trial for young members

Comments Off on Winterton Gym investment extends access hours and launches new trial for young members

North Lincolnshire Council has invested in Winterton to enhance customer access at NL Active Winterton. These improvements include:

  • Installation of additional CCTV cameras, now linked to our central control centre to improve site security.
  • Introduction of the Door Watch access system, enabling members to enter the gym during unstaffed hours using their membership card or wristband.
  • Creation of two new Duty Manager roles to support customers with their fitness goals

These developments have paved the way for safe, extended access hours – giving you more freedom to work out on your schedule.  We are pleased to be able to respond  to our gym users and announce that Winterton Gym will be trialling extended opening hours:

  • Monday to Sunday: 6am to 10pm

As always we ask customers to continue their smooth experience by pre-booking their sessions through our online booking site but members can also check in and book on-site using the kiosk.

We’ve also launched a new initiative aimed at supporting the health and wellbeing of young people in our community.

Again, for a 3-month trial period, 14 and 15-year-olds with a Fitness+ Junior Membership will be able to use the gym unaccompanied once they have updated their membership records.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said:  “This continued investment in Winterton Gym is part of our wider commitment to supporting our rural communities and improving access to health and wellbeing services for all.   I have spoken to a number of residents who wanted improved access to their facilities and I am pleased that we have been able to support them.

“By extending gym hours and making it easier for people to fit fitness into their lives, we’re helping more residents – wherever they live – to lead healthier, more active lifestyles.”

Cllr Elaine Marper, cabinet member for transforming the customer journey, said:  “We have been working with our residents now for a number of months to secure these improved access hours.  This is a fantastic new initiative that opens up new opportunities, especially for young people in Winterton who may not be able to travel to larger gyms.   Giving 14 and 15-year-olds the chance to access the facilities independently is a big step forward.

It’s important to remember this is a trial, so I’d encourage everyone to make the most of it and show there’s real demand to make these improved hours permanent.”

Take advantage of our June offer!

From 15 to 30 June 2025, new members can sign up online and enjoy:

  • Half price joining fee
  • Half price membership in July

Are you looking for a little motivation to get moving this summer? Sometimes all it takes is a little inspiration, and the junior players at North Lincolnshire Badminton Academy who train right here at NL Active Ancholme have delivered just that.

Over the weekend, around 30 talented young athletes from the Academy took to the courts at the Lincs County Junior Championships. Competing across age groups from Under 12 to Under 18, they showed that dedication, and hard work really do pay off, bringing home a fantastic haul of medals in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles!

For many, this was their first ever competition experience, and we couldn’t be prouder of how they rose to the challenge. Whether it was stepping on court for the first time or pushing for a podium finish, every player gave it their all, and that’s what true achievements look like.

At NL Active, we believe in celebrating success of all kinds, whether it’s someone taking the first step on their fitness journey or young athletes finding their stride in competition. It’s about building confidence, supporting one another, and creating opportunities to grow.

A huge well done to all the players, coaches, and families who made the moment possible. The determination, sportsmanship, and team spirit on display are what NL Active is all about!

Love racket sports? Find your court!
If badminton, tennis, pickle ball or squash is your thing, or something you’ve been meaning to try, we’ve got you covered. NL Active offers accessible, welcoming sessions and courts across North Lincolnshire for all ages and abilities.

Whether you’re picking up a racket for the first time or looking to improve your game, racket sports is a great way to stay active, social, and have fun while doing it.

Children and families dive into free swimming fun

Comments Off on Children and families dive into free swimming fun

North Lincolnshire’s investment in the Easter Daze free swimming programme made a triumphant return this spring, bringing joy and improving fitness levels for hundreds of children and families across the county. Over the course of the Easter holidays, more than 2,400 free swims were enjoyed at local hubs and leisure centres.

Running from 7 April to 21 April, the programme allowed children under 16 to enjoy free swimming at six pools across North Lincolnshire, including The Pods, Riddings Community Hub, Ancholme Leisure Centre, Axholme North Leisure Centre, Baysgarth Community Hub, and Epworth Swimming Pool.

Cllr Julie Reed, cabinet member for children, families, and communities, expressed her excitement for the programme’s success: “As a parent, I know how difficult it can be to plan activities during the holidays, which is why I am proud that we have delivered the investment to see the return of these free swimming sessions. It’s a fantastic way for children to have fun with their friends and family in a secure, lifeguard-supervised environment in contrast to the risks that come from open water swimming.”

This year new special family sessions also enabled entire households to swim for free, ensuring that families could enjoy quality time together while staying active.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, highlighted the overwhelming response from the community: “Investing in children and families is a real priority for us as a council. We always knew these free-swimming sessions were popular, but seeing such a high attendance across all our venues really shows how valued they are.

“With hundreds of children and families enjoying Easter Daze swimming, the initiative has once again proven to be a hit, making the holidays memorable while promoting health, safety, and the importance of swimming as an essential life skill. We know that lots of parents, grandparents and carers enjoy supporting their young people to become physically active and this investment also helps to support the family budget as well.”
